Films concerned with undercover agents make for easy discussions on the nature of performance, the dark pleasures and dangers of indulging a created or forced-upon version of one’s self, and if 21 Jump Street takes a decidedly lighter tone than, say, Deep Cover or Donnie Brasco, it still offers vibrant subtext and a rigorous, disjointed sense of humor.

Rewriting the high-school comedy landscape gives 21 Jump Street a spine even when scenes are clearly improvised. Dialogue is delivered at a rapid clip by every cast member, abetting jokes with forceful speed. Better yet, every shot of Lord and Chris Miller’s film is meticulously composed in widescreen, every frame a crisp pleasure rather than a bleary staging ground for ad-libbing. Combining thematic focus with visual attentiveness, 21 Jump Street is a model comedy.

Loosely based on the TV series, this lowbrow comedy looks like it was shot in about a week, which would explain why some jokes have an off-the-cuff appeal and others just feel half-assed… Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) seem to be after the gentle irreverence of David Gordon Green’s buddy flick Pineapple Express, but without his sensitivity and attention to character the movie quickly grows monotonous.
