A long watch, but a film with high-octane virility. The stories feel bolted together: dogs the motif of each, representing our uprooted souls. Valeria’s lapdog symbolises her anxiety and presentiment of future calamity. El Chivo’s posse of dogs, his emotional life, symbolise his misanthropy and alienation. Cofi becomes a metonym for the sufferings of his handler: the stigmata of pain, incomprehension and suffering.

It so articulately pieces together its broken characters and conjoins seemingly disparate storylines through allegory (be it centered around canines, violence, or both) that it's almost impossible to conceive it as a maiden directorial effort.

The cinematography and blocking are so good, it's worth watching the film to see those two in action. I liked the stories. They're complex and real. I'm not a huge fan of González Iñárritu's completely dour outlook on life, but you have to agree his films bring something new to the table. They are masterpieces, just not the type of films I'd watch time and time again.

I've never been a big admirer of Iñárritu's ambitions—his capital-T Truth feels too much like capital-M Movie. Oddly, I thought of Sirk, and how I like a soap opera that smuggles in serious statements more than a serious statement that pretends it's not half soap opera. But his debut's end-of-youth, something-to-prove mode suits him, and you have to admire the narrative energy he can sustain for two and a half hours.

With this director, there's never problems with the technical aspects. Couple that with a great story with 3 intertwining plots and it's hard to beat. The problem is the subject matter. I love dogs, and I don't like dogfighting, even if it is fake. Gael Garcia Bernal does an outstanding job on this movie. Feeding chocolates to a dog?! What's wrong with these people?
