THE CHILDREN OF THE DEAD

Kelly Copper, Pavol Liska Autriche, 2019
Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska, a Floridian-Slovakian filmmaking duo taking inspiration from Guy Maddin, use silent Super 8mm to tackle Elfriede Jelinek’s Austria-set apocalyptic novel: while Syrian refugees are rebuffed from a Styrian restaurant, heavily made-up zombies rise from the grave, disinterring the region’s own historical skeletons, as the film heads to a crazed crescendo.

For all its engagement with these themes the film is not chilling or didactic but chaotic, bawdy and even, finally, exuberant.

This is an excellent B-series musical black comedy that invites you to reflect on Austria’s Nazi past, as well as on the eruption of modern-day xenophobia.

The filmmakers cleverly conflate a migration satire with a ‘herimatfilm (or homeland film) a style popular in Germany, Switzerland and Austria from the 1940s until 1970s, radically rejecting classical cinema to create instead a moody meditation on contemporary Austria.
