Synopsis

Set in early 70s Harlem, Tish, 19, is in love with a young sculptor, Fonny, the father of her unborn child. When Fonny is falsely accused of rape and imprisoned, Tish and their families race to clear his name before the baby is born. An adaptation of James Baldwin’s stunning novel of the same title.

Uninterrupted, [Tish and Fonny’s] shared tenderness is luxuriated in, while Nicholas Britell’s vivid, Oscar-nominated, original orchestral score provides precisely the required timbres of cinematic melancholy and romanticism. It is a joy to watch.

What’s most remarkable about the movie, aside from its sheer physical beauty and intense yet restrained performances, is how Jenkins democratizes the story, adopting one character’s point-of-view and then another, in different sections of the movie, and often within individual scenes.
