Selick’s use of stop-motion animation (following a rather drawn-out live-action first act) to adapt this story was a stroke of genius, then—you feel like you can reach out and touch the fuzzy-skinned fruit, the spider’s silken web, the billowing clouds that surround the peach when it’s carried aloft by birds. However, there’s also a stuttering rapidity to stop-motion, a sense that everything is moving too fast, which occasionally stifles the storytelling by rushing it forward
