cinematography by Michel Fournier. "Desire" list: "con le armi della poesia", Garrel gives us the most cinematically visionary of his films, in which Terzieff emerge as a creature of light and shadow, and in this demiurgy of light appears as an angel purified with a scintillating beauty.
PHONY ART. === Experimental or underground? More like artistic nothingness. LAFFONT so beautiful is bad, the extraordinary TERZIEFF is insignificant, the award goes to the kid that runs at night on a national road.
I really wanted to like this. The first 25 minutes (through the fir tree sequence) were good, the rest was tedious. The Freudian stuff was pretty obvious and on the nose and didn't do much for me. You may now take me to Cinephile Jail.
Visually captivating thanks to some very imaginative camera and lighting technique. Thematically slim and repetitive. But experimental film shouldn't really be graded, the good ones create their own world and their own criterion outside the quotidian. Bad ones often get to ride on the overall respect demanded by
the more exemplary ones. Litmus tests turn funny
colors either way. Everybody's pregnant.
An early film from Garrel that presents a stark b&w Freudian view of childhood in both its matriarchal and patriarchal influences. Arresting images throughout but experimental in nature. Infamous in that its production was done with the cast and crew under the influence of LSD which may explain the detachment and other worldly feeling. Interesting curio.
Showcasing a variety of memorable scenes along with one of the most interesting uses of light in B&W cinematography, Le révélateur creates an atmosphere of its own through its conceptual design and execution. Philippe Garrel at only twenty years of age managed to create a work that through its rather ambiguous dreamscape, molded after Freud's theories, feels relevant and fresh even today.
