L'enfant secret Réalisé par Philippe Garrel
Despite the implications of such drama, it’s marked by a quiet ceremony that’s complemented by Faton Cahen’s blithe score. An understated radicalism of both content and form defines Garrel’s seemingly unbalanced oeuvre, and L’ENFANT SECRET is a median amidst the paradoxes.

The rareness of L’Enfant Secret has heightened its reputation as a precious object, a movie so intimate that watching it makes you feel as though you’ve been let in on something private. Nakedly autobiographical, the film plays like a confession; moreover, Garrel elicits such sensitive performances from his actors that they too seem to be baring their souls.

Both Anne Wiazemsky and Henri de Maublanc give otherworldly performances as the tumultuous couple who undergo several trials, including separation and drug addiction (the film was made right after Garrel’s separation with Nico), which of course are never resolved, only lived through. L’Enfant secret is one of the most ephemeral films I’ve ever had the pleasure of inhabiting, and by Garrel’s own words, that is not by design.
