Ce que vous en pensez

  • chanandre's rating of the film Live by Night

After Leone, DePalma, Scorsese, Coppola and their cinematic offspring (PTA, Gray and Mann), time has come to Affleck's name be up on the marquee of the great directors who tackled the roaring 20s & their violence. Affleck (alongside Hardy) is THE hero of our time. His shoulders are in cinemascope. He's to the 10s what Muni, Wayne, Bogart, Mitchum, G.Robinson, Cagney, Cooper, Widmark & Hayden, were to the 30s & 40s ▽

  • Dave's rating of the film Live by Night

I don't know if Ben Affleck has made a truly great film, but he's made a few that are at least damn close - and this may be my favorite of his work. He is an outstanding director who consistently works with top-flight cinematographers to create gorgeously-shot films. Who would have thought that he would become one of the most consistent of mainstream directors?

  • msmichel's rating of the film Live by Night

Affleck has received a lesson in hubris with his latest after the very over-rated 'Argo'. This isthe filmic equivalent of the star athlete who doesn't train for his next event thinking the same magic will strike again. It does not. A misfire of the first order from scripting and casting/performance all the way down the line. When even the camerawork of Robert Richardson doesn't impress you've got serious issues.

  • Stephane Tanaka's rating of the film Live by Night

3.5. Well made, as usual with Affleck, but very banal gangster story in the end, despite some interesting themes like ww1 disillusionments, mafia in the 20's, Cuban diaspora, prohibition, religious fanatism etc. Enjoyable

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Live by Night

Live by Night feeds into the deficit of old-fashioned gangster films in the modern day, yet contributes to the ever-growing pile of forgettable endeavors of the genre that we've been burdened with for long enough. It's another film riddled with potential that is crushed under the weight of its aesthetics, no strong narrative, and no convincing performances to lift it up from unfortunate, if foreseeable, mediocrity.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Live by Night

A prohibition-set gangster thriller penned by Lehane with Affleck in the director's chair sounds unassailable on paper -- but Ben works best with focused thrillers set in gritty contemporary environments, and "Live by Night" sprawls and wanders without the engaging characters, humble insights or subtlety to sustain itself. You'd be pressed to find a more ravishing film, but the gorgeous pastels are ultimately hollow.

  • Sean Patrick Stevens's rating of the film Live by Night

I saw Ben Affleck give a Q&A and his love of the Warner Bros. Gangster movies was effusive and noticeable in the final product with the closeups he gives the female actresses. I liked this film's literary excesses like how the film was jam-packed with incident from the book and especially how he took quieter, character driven approach for a film of this type giving great moments to Brendan Gleeson and Chris Cooper.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Live by Night

This is a badass little gangster epic that provides a lot of history and insight into the Prohibition gangster era and the ideals that surrounded it. Affleck continues to deliver great cinema and in my opinion is one of the best directors going and yet again he has assembled a stellar cast of some of the greatest actors big and small.
