Synopsis

George and Rose Loomis are honeymooning at a Niagara Falls motel. She plots with Ted Patrick to do him in, but all does not go smoothly. For one thing, after Loomis is reported missing Polly Cutler spies him at the motel but her husband Bud thinks she’s imagining it.

A classic trope is that Americans are comfortable with cinematic violence in a way they are not comfortable with cinematic sex. This might be true: It’s also true that Marilyn Monroe’s eroticism is an act of violence, a distortion of the natural and expected heterosexual order so extreme as to appear destructive.

A realistic, well-wrought script by Billy Wilder’s regular collaborators Charles Brackett (who also produced Niagara), Walter Reisch, and Richard Breen fills the film with details that ensure the entire enterprise isn’t overwhelmed by either Monroe or the falls. Hathaway realizes those details to make this film come alive…

Expressive colour should be something not judged according to the criteria of the painter. I can think of no better example than Niagara itself. Its colour is alive, it speaks, even if it is a shade on the vulgar side. But this shrillness is about something new, and I find it very exciting. It [CinemaScope] only has to be harnessed now.
