  1. Dominik's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Seemingly old-fashioned and outdated, "Our Daily Bread" is a beautiful story which remains socially relevant even today. It's most prominent features are the well-directed labor scenes which border on the poetic, giving the best of Soviet propaganda a run for it's money.

  2. _vitor_'s rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

O famoso "tão deixando a gente sonhar", bem confortável de assistir

  3. Karlos Miguel Gomes Sena's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  4. Miguel's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  5. Ilario Santovito's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Those who expect to see a classic Hollywood movie are wrong, Simply call it realism.

  6. Allan Rosendo's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  8. dionysus67's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Vidor's fusion of idealism (the duty to society and character integrity) with materialism (the earth's abundance and the collective appropriation of the means of production) transforms a didactic story to one that hits upon profound truths. Characterization is served superbly (e.g. the Swede), the various setbacks are unexpected and the irrigation construction scene and flow to collective euphoria is extraordinary!

  9. Erik's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  10. Florence G's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Despite the clichéd plot and simplified representation of a “socialist” / sustainable lifestyle, the film is full of hope. There are many moral messages, such as anti-establishmentarianism, that would have been controversial during the depression. The lack of progressive attitudes in regards to gender etc is disappointing but not unsurprising. Cast in stereotypical “roles” so as to not detract from Vidor’s messages.

  11. Giulio Base's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

So simple, so pure, so perfect. A good old style poem to country-life and to the human souls with good willing. It still looks as a silent film, with dialogues. Moving 'til the end.

  12. Jeff Gay's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

This was a sequel of sorts to The Crowd; despite the previous film’s success, it’s director could not find a studio to take on ODB. While I applaud the socialist themes, it misses on account of heavy-handed execution and its gosh-golly-gee moralizing. That is, until the film’s last quarter: action shifts to men swinging pick axes, feverishly digging a ditch to divert water onto a corn field. A surprise strong ending!

  13. Sousami's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Apart from the explicit propaganda and the typical white and man-centred culture which carries the plot, the film depicts well the pragmatic and enterprising attitude of the US.

  14. DebraM's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Incredibly simplistic depression era drama that promotes a white and very male-led collective future - the two female characters are sadly reduced to femme fatale and home-maker. In 2020 it's cringe-inducing, but to be made in Hollywood in 1934 makes this worth watching and talking about. Technically, it's beautifully made and worth watching for that alone.

  15. Renightz's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  16. YlmzCyln's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Bir sinema filminde beklenilen her şeyi içeren başyapıt niteliğinde bir film.

  17. Deniz.ipek's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  18. Tomasz Jasiński's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

I've seen really good socialist / propaganda films, but this one is just more coarse than the performance of students at school.

  19. coffeeandfilm's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Old but provides a refreshing, artistic vista on The Great Depression which I have only read about in textbooks. The politics in this film may be too simplistic in current times (almost fantasy-like) but it seems to be a kind of film people needed during that time - joyous, inspiring and hopeful.

  20. Giovanni's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

I Think this movie is not simply a socialism apology. Socialism is just an excuse to focus on the main subject: the power, the strenght of people that when unite together can reach any goal, even the hardest. A great lesson for the contemporary society of atomized hidden men (and women).

  21. Gabriel Vasto Laurindo De Masi's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

Hard to believe it's an american movie, it seens like something that Marx would be proud of watch; but it is a beautiful story on human equality (well, almost, considering the explicit gender division ineherent to the society at the time) and comunity work, maybe more like a tribute to early USA occupation than to sovietic ideas, or just propaganda to recover from the depression of 29, who knows? :)

  22. Juan's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

  23. Wesley Pereira de Castro's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

(WPC>)

  24. Cynth's rating of the film Notre pain quotidien

A bit propagandistic, yet it fits the troublesome times of the period. The minimized housewife scenes are hard to watch without rolling my eyes, but it depicts the role women had in society. Some good acting, some weird acting. A hopeful watch during quarantine.
