You may think you’ve seen it all when one sibling spills the other onto the front steps of a hospital emergency room from his dump truck. There’s more at the close, when Rams turns shockingly primeval, and as beautiful and satisfying as it is improbable. Unless, of course, you happen to be an Icelandic bachelor in a blizzard, looking for his lost sheep and trying to make up for 40 lost years.

Director Grímur Hákonarson excels at building tension through long takes, and the actors are excellent. Sigurjónsson offers a world of meaning in a grunt or a lift of the shoulders. The brothers themselves are the “rams,” of course, the question being whether nature favors selfishness or blood ties.

An astonishing and upsetting film from director Grímur Hákonarson (who also wrote the script)… Within the first 5 minutes, it creates a horrible rip-tide of irresistible emotion. Backstory is not provided. So you discover what is happening in real-time. You are asked to catch up, or at least, follow along, all on your own.
