The resistance flees, a droid near destroyed, a hero carbon frozen, another mutilated and a familial relation made known that could drive one to madness......this is how you end a movie? By far the best entry (to date) in the long running series 'Empire' wears its movie serial influences on its sleeve and entertains as much now as it did on release.
The best of all six Star Wars films. "Empire" is the heart of the series, building on the mythos established in the original movie yet expanding it for future sequels and prequels. And which of George Lucas' other creative brainchildren has so many iconic moments? The Battle of Hoth, Han Solo frozen in carbonite, Yoda's first appearance, and the quintessential "I am your father"... the list goes on and on.
This has catapulted to my top 5 blu-ray viewing experiences. "Empire" set the template for the perfect sequel and yet it's a wonder why so few movies follow it. It's darker in look and tone; it greatly expands the first film's mythology; and although the stakes are actually lower - the Rebellion isn't in danger as much as our band of heroes is - we care more because we've become so invested in these characters.
I prefer the first: original and honest storytelling of a completely different universe just fascinates me. However, this is more the epic sci-fi. Maybe the most entertaining of the three, but I still look at the first as the better film. 4/5
An intelligent expansion and follow up to the original STAR WARS film. Fast, funny, entertaining without insulting the intelligence.
And then came those Ewoks, and George Lucas' sanity was gone for good.
