Avis des critiques

Something of an overlooked masterpiece… De Sica shapes the movie around him as a low-to-the-floor centrifuge of silent bitterness, unanswered questions, and gossipy catastrophe. No one acknowledges what’s really going on — the boy’s internal ruination — because everyone has their own agenda, and the upshot might be the first great film made about parental damage.

The painful and necessary maturation is not just that of a child, but, as befits a crossroads between white-telephone polish and neo-realist inquiry, of Italian cinema, too.
