COME AS YOU ARE

Desiree Akhavan États-Unis, 2018
In a particularly clever montage of the various icebergs drawn by the disciples of God’s Promise, Akhavan offers a sharp overview of the reasons its inhabitants have been encouraged to attribute to their latent homosexuality.

The trio’s quiet, calmly assured camaraderie forms some of the most heartening – and uncomplicated – joys of the film, far removed from the pre-planned activities and relentless self-searching demanded of them the rest of the time.

Moretz never quite blends in. Every time she’s on screen, it reminds us that for all its realism and quiet sensitivity, Cameron Post can’t help but feel like a tame Hollywood gloss on a rich, complicated subject. That’s not the fault of Moretz, but it emerges as an interesting problem for the movie.

A horrific off-camera event introduces some tension, but its impact feels indistinct and diffuse rather than wrenching. Still, these kids get to you. Moretz plays Cameron as a young woman who knows her own mind, refusing to let it be reshaped—but she also suggests how long-term defensiveness can cause a kind of internal bruising that doesn’t always show.

Everything stays in the realm of binarity—desire versus sin, religion versus sex—while therapy is dismissed as an everything-has-to-do-with-the-mother Freudian scam. And yet, it's not dismissed extravagantly enough, despite how much some of the lines could have lent themselves to amusing delivery: “Would you let drug addicts throw parades for themselves?”

The movie’s depiction of conversion therapy aptly stokes outrage at the cruelty that it inflicts upon the teens who are subjected to it, but the movie’s artistic vision isn’t up to the passions, the politics, and the conflicts that it evokes.

There's freshness in a film that is neither a hatchet job on Christianity, nor on belief per se. It is also not, let's be clear, a search for spurious "balance" either. . . . It's a sharply observed study — with a knife edge of satire, for sure — of the daily practice of soft tyranny by people not gifted with healthy self-doubt.

The New York Times
“Miseducation” is neither a glib sendup of a less enlightened era nor a pious reckoning with the bygone injustices of the past. It is more interested in how its characters feel than in what they might symbolize, and in how they grapple with the conflicting demands of faith and desire.

Akhavan opts for even-handedness instead of relying on melodrama to raise the film’s dramatic stakes. It’s an act of tenderness toward her characters, none of which she allows to function as a traditional villain. Even Reverend Rick is gifted an opportunity to prove his capacity for empathy.

But I’m a Cheerleader was . . . a cult classic that reassured thousands of closeted kids that there was, in fact, nothing wrong with them. The Miseducation of Cameron Postmay be a more somber telling of the story of gay conversion therapy, but it may prove to be just as important.

Akhavan elicits finely layered performances from her cast. Moretz digs deeper than she has in years for a sensitive lead turn that harmonizes especially well with her co-stars. Particular praise is due to Gallagher and Campbell, who touchingly project people desperate to wear a skin of "normalcy" that's as friable as wet tissue.
