La mule

The Mule

Réalisé par Clint Eastwood
États-Unis, 2018
Policier, Drame, Thriller

Clint Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he’s just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel.

It’s rare for a film about a Mexican drug cartel and the impossibility of the American Dream to be either disarming or funny, but Clint Eastwood has blessedly delivered one that is consistently both.

Rascally Stone — a roustabout who likes growing day lilies, driving, and doing more than flirting — recalls classical, Old Hollywood moralism. No wonder it’s been ignored by this year’s award hacks.

Compared to the tension of American Sniper or the theatrics of Sully (arguably his best film of the 2010s), The Mule feels offhand; like this year’s 15:17 to Paris, it might be accused of indulging in some of Eastwood’s worst tendencies. But there’s something there, glinting.

Hello there, do you have a minute to talk about Clint Eastwood, American Auteur? The screenplay for THE MULE probably could have used a second draft (or a first one). The actors here not unmistakably on the fame spectrum are straight outta Central Casting. Et cetera. Keep it simple, stupid. You see, Clint knows a strong wind can blow much of a movie away; what you need to leave standing is a pure and noble core.

After the debacle of '15:17 to Paris' earlier in the year Eastwood delivers a solid tale here that shows the hand of an elder master director at work. While the familial arm of the story may seem clichéd, the main thrust of the story concerning an aged man brought into the world of the Mexican cartels as a drug runner is quite well told. The casting on that side of the story is quite precise and offers reward.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film La mule

Clint Eastwood's contributions to cinema have become as intrinsically American as the open road, so it's fitting that, at last, Eastwood has arrived at his road movie. Eastwood's character, and by proxy the film, is never happier than when he's cruising down a two lane road in the middle of nowhere, humming along to Willie Nelson, eating an ice cream sandwich. But the demands of fatherhood are rarely far behind.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film La mule

I don't like recent Eastwood’s films especially, but I like individual elements in his films like boldness, taciturnity, subtlety and magnificence. But his latest, “The Mule” is only a feel-good movie which any director could make. Although surely I feel good, I don't want such kind of banality from Eastwood. (Maybe critics in Japan and France will overpraise this banal movie like a brown-nose idiot, fucking sigh).

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film La mule

As in GRAN TORINO, EASTWOOD confronts the aging American man with the US society today. No longer suburban thugs this time, but the tough drug cartel. With, as added bonus, the vast landscapes of New Mexico === Dans la lignée de GRAN TORINO, EASTWOOD confronte l'américain âgé à la société d'aujourd'hui. Non plus des voyous de banlieues, mais le dur cartel de la drogue. Avec en prime les routes du Nouveau Mexique 7/10

  • josé neves's rating of the film La mule

Mule, in figurative Portuguese, also means stubborn, which was always the property ostensibly sought by Eastwood for the characters interpreted by him and in this film, is in that appropriation that resides its most interesting side. The rest is a simple narrativity that almost always defined him and has led a multitude to consider him a genius. And his particular confrontation with the politically correct.

  • Z's rating of the film La mule

Feels like an antidote to the casual nihilism and fashionable politics that now dominate mainstream film making. Eastwood's Earl is a man attempting to live uncompromisingly in a corporate controlled culture designed to crush individualism and throw people out like trash. It's a mature film about looking back at one's life and coming to terms with what is and what might have been had different choices been made.
