When the young woman Tristana’s mother dies, she is entrusted to the guardianship of the well-respected libertine aristocrat Don Lope, who seduces the woman, setting her on a path to bitterness and manipulation. Tristana soon wishes to become independent, and falls in love with a young artist.

Filming in Franco’s Spain with the sufferance of the Church, Buñuel set the action in pre-Civil War Toledo, but his sly, ironic fancies do the established order no favors. Here, the rigid rituals of duty and honor form an inextricable bond of pleasure and degradation, of sex and death—and render sin all the more exciting.
