ET... TA MÈRE AUSSI!

Alfonso Cuarón Mexique, 2001
Freedom, which in terms of moviemaking can be said to be the filmmaker's refusal to fear risk, is the key to [the film]... The fearlessness of Y tu mamá también isn't Cuarón's alone. It also exists in the offhand bravery of the three lead performances. For the movie to work, the actors have to be as free and unembarrassed on-screen as their characters are, and there isn't a false note among them.

A genuine rarity: a sex comedy with brains. Even rarer, one with smart politics--so unobtrusive you may not notice--and wonderful acting... It's not difficult to understand why this movie has been a smash success in Mexico, especially with teenagers; few films deal with teenage hormones, Latin machismo, and the complexities of friendship in such a refreshing way. The movie keeps surprising you and stays with you long after it's over.

Cuarón repeatedly, perversely undercuts the joie de vivre even as he creates it, giving the movie a mournful undercurrent that places the good-time shenanigans in welcome perspective... and Bernal is going places. You heard it here first.

Funky and tender, Y Tu Mamá También is more thoughtful in redeeming a crass genre, evoking Jules and Jim as well as Beavis and Butt-head... It has the charm of the original American road movies, feasting on the gorgeous, ramshackle landscape of the filmmaker's motherland.

To Be (Cont'd)
Y Tu Mamá También is the fourth feature by the Mexican filmmaker, and easily one of the sexiest and funniest films about class struggle ever made. Written by his brother Carlos, who also wrote the director's first feature, Love in the Time of Hysteria, the film is smarter than its raunchy good humor, its fart jokes and circle jerks, initially suggests.

While Tambien's narration is as decidedly distancing and off-putting as Jules and Jim's, it's a necessary evil. Though self-important, the film's narration is the only indication Cuarón takes the story's slim political aspirations seriously. Character trajectories are a bit obvious: Luisa goes from kitten to sly fox, getting the upper hand and pointing out Julio and Tenoch's hypocritical foibles (as well as their latent gay lust).
