Zodiac Réalisé par David Fincher
More than any American movie of the past decade, Zodiac accepts and embraces irresolvability, which may be why it’s so hypnotically rewatchable. If it’s a cosmic drama, it’s one that works on macro and micro levels. Its depiction of the hunt for the most notorious and mysterious serial killer of the 20th century is at once suggestive of larger cultural shifts while also being detailed down to the inch.

It’s richly addictive, all thanks to its crack squads before and behind the camera, sharing an attention to detail that’s fitfully obsessive. That the film itself has gained a cult following of viewers looking to unravel every trick loaded into its nearly three-hour length is even tastier.

Deep in the film, as Robert seems to have lost everything, he finds himself investigating on a rainy night as he visits Bob Vaughn, who worked as an organist at same movie theatre as one of the Zodiac suspects. The scene might be one of the best works of horror in contemporary cinema, a succinct meeting of suspicion and paranoia that challenges an audience’s need for closure.

Ce que vous en pensez

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Zodiac

Although somewhat overlooked in its time, "Zodiac" is now rightfully heralded as director David Fincher's masterwork. The lengthy runtime allows the viewer to fully immerse themselves in both the rich period texture and Bay Area landscape, as well as experience the precise moment when the characters' (and by proxy Fincher's) fascination with process, procedure, and investigation tips over into outright obsession.

  • Richmond Hill's rating of the film Zodiac

A technically competent film but it lacks dynamism with split narrative focus and a flitting timeline that may well propel the clock forward (with seemingly endless date captions) but reduces the story to a rather bitty affair with no real interest established in the protagonists or situation (despite the cipher codes and inevitable investigation). All curiously unexciting.

  • Graveyard Poet's rating of the film Zodiac

By far the finest Fincher film and, perhaps, the greatest film made between 2000 & 2009. Cerebral, nuanced, subtle, with an outstanding cast of actors at their low key best, textured cinematography, a timeless score, and an absolutely brilliant late 1960s/early 1970s soundtrack.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Zodiac

The first half-hour is good, but then it gets so slow and uninspired. The focus keeps switching from the detectives to the journalists, with both fronts being equally boring. Robert Downey Jr. and Chloë Sevigny seemed completely miscast. A lot of characters and information just kept being thrown as years passed by, leading to a mildly interesting final confrontation. All that research overtook the rhythm of the film.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Zodiac

I actually like Fincher's cinema a lot, i'ts pure broken american dream. You can tell he loves movie making and storytelling. Zodiac is an almost-3-hours-investigation-movie that catches the dark atmosphere of an ever darker true story. With nice scenes and cast, it delivers what it promises: rythm, twists and suspense.

  • Harry Rossi's rating of the film Zodiac

Probably Fincher's best work behind Se7en. Impeccably directed, shot and acted, Fincher proves he has a masterful control of his craft. I swear to God this film felt like it was directed by a machine. 100% entertaining from start to finish and the ending is absolutely chilling. Loved it.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Zodiac

"Zodiac" is a harmonic convergence of director and material; Fincher's attentiveness to behavior and information -- how much we know, how it's presented, and what makes it relevant -- has never been more welcome. That the film can invest us so naturally in new leads and promising suspects, without simplifying or spinning the details for dramatic effect, is a testament to Fincher's genius.

  • Dave's rating of the film Zodiac

Everyone already knows the conclusion and even so Fincher manages to make it all unbearable suspenseful. 2007 was a great year in movies and Zodiac remains one of the best to be released. Far and away my favorite Fincher film.
