समीक्षक के रिव्यू

Though it borrows stray cues from The Apu Trilogy and Au hasard Balthasar, Lamb, Zeleke’s assured debut feature, a tender portrait of a child in extremis, emerges as a new voice, one of naked originality.

Determinism is dissipated in Zeleke’s Lamb by way of the director’s sympathetic approach to his characters (especially women), while the film’s old-fashioned adherence to realism and humanism recalls the cinema of Satyajit Ray. Set within a series of gorgeous landscapes, this warm, unembellished film feels universal and timeless, but its key themes are also very timely: whether we’re talking about the internal or external, hometown or country, this is a highly resonant story about displacement.

The Ethiopian film Lamb (Yared Zeleke) was a surprisingly accomplished work, affording insight into a country that is all too often subject, in Western eyes, to a narrow compass of clichés.

  • Kim Bolarinwa's rating of the film Lamb

This story illustrates the beauty and hardship of rural Ethiopians through the eyes of a boy. The themes of poverty, importance of family, the position of women in society, religion and death are revealed in an straightforward manner. The acting is authentic and the cinematography is exquisite.

  • Robert's rating of the film Lamb

Worth watching for the depiction of Ethiopia. Enjoyed the characters and setting immensely.

  • Slappy McGee's rating of the film Lamb

Such a beautiful film. Not only gorgeous to look at, but emotionally charged and viscerally satisfying as well. The metaphorical tying in of childhood innocence to the lamb is a wonderful way to deliver this narrative. Such an impressive film from Yared Zeleke.

  • adalpi's rating of the film Lamb

  • cin·aes·the·tic's rating of the film Lamb

The quiet, quotidian patterns of rural life are depicted in rich detail, and the story doesn't offer any magic solutions to the world's problems, other than the ones we already know instinctively: Be kind to others. The film also shows the effects of cultural tension created by gendered work expectations imposed on children (boys shouldn't cook and clean, girls shouldn't read or become doctors) are nigh universal.

  • Adam GR's rating of the film Lamb

A boy lost in the isolation of a nonconforming childhood. Ethiopia's majestic vistas. Good sheep acting. Emotive, heightened by Josée Deshaies' framed composition and Christophe Chassol's lyrical score. Dedicated to Zeleke's grandmother, that character's presence stands out memorably as the voice of reason.

  • AVA's rating of the film Lamb

  • A.B. II: The Return's rating of the film Lamb

There's nothing in Zeleke's film that I could honestly describe as unique or groundbreaking. But, he does a good job at world-building. The more the film went on, the more real the people and places became, and I became totally invested in all that was going on. It's a basic and simple film, but one's that worth a viewing.
