Bending genre plasticity is Rian Johnson’s strength, as is reinterpreting referential fragments into something subtle yet riveting. Slyly quoting various practitioners of sci-fi, whether outlandish—Cameron, Gilliam, Otomo—or minimal—Carruth, Godard—Looper is an intelligent, increasingly rare crowd pleaser.

Looper is really a parable of self-absorption, a story of a man looking himself in the eyes and coming to the startling realization that he’s allowed himself to become a monster. Johnson’s deft script initially splits your sympathies, as it’s difficult, at first, to tell which Joe is more emotionally centered.

Perhaps it was the combination of Bruce Willis and a sci-fi-action premise, with the connotative power of Joseph Gordon Levitt and Brick injecting a dose of indie-noir, self-aware sentiment that offset me from the beginning. Additionally, I was forever trying to critique Gordon Levitt’s fun portrayal of an action icon: what parts of his reconstructed Willis-esque face were make up and what parts CGI? And how much of the embodiment was Gordon Levitt’s physical mimicry and performance prowess?

  • dave gunn's rating of the film Looper

One of the most brilliant sci-fi films in film history, in my opinion. With a tasteful use of special effects, beautiful cinematography, a complex and unique story of time travel and sacrifice, and a refreshingly realistic view of the future, this is all around perfect. Rian Johnson is fearless.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Looper

Many good things here. Good cinematography. Good performances. Good story telling. Good sci-fi scenario, in a surprising atmosphere, with film-noir aspects. Above all, the story does not collapse, like in so many cases, for the movie to go into an action frenzy in the last two thirds of the screening. It holds. There is such a thing as good recent sci-fi features made by Hollywood. Keep them coming, please!

  • Matthew_Lucas's rating of the film Looper

It's rare for a piece of smartly written and conceived piece of sci-fi like this to come along, but Rian Johnson's LOOPER is an engaging and original piece of genre filmmaking. Joseph Gordon Levitt stars as an assassin tasked with killing his future self (Bruce Willis). A complex and mind bending tale of time travel that raises fascinating moral questions with a surprising emotional core. Top notch work.

  • Harry Rossi's rating of the film Looper

Absolutely fantastic film, masterful even. One of the best sci-fi films made in a long time and definitely one of the best time travel films I've seen. I loved the world that this film existed in and I loved the morally ambiguous characters in the film. This film's philosophy is fascinating, absolutely fascinating and incredibly intelligent. That with the wonderful acting and cool action made this a great experience.

  • Anna's rating of the film Looper

The best action film of the year (fuck The Dark Knight Rises), and probably the best sci-fi one too. Rian Johnson is brilliant.

  • PolarisDiB's rating of the film Looper

As striking visually and as loving for a time travel popcorn flick as Brick was for noir, with the same sort of novel and memorable concepts and twists that make it a considerate new addition to the genre. Rian Johnson is so far making a career of taking concepts that could easily devolve into camp and giving it a seriousness and luster that can't be ignored. --PolarisDiB

  • Ghostman's rating of the film Looper

A masterwork, one of the best sci fi films and quite possibly one of the best if not the best time travel film. I'd put it on the same level as la jetee. Yeah, that's right.

  • João Biscaia's rating of the film Looper

This kind of plot has been coming and going since, what, Le Jetée? But it's two steps ahead of Twelve Monkeys and fours steps ahead of the normal blockbuster action flick that wants to go dystopic. I enjoyed it a lot. It's smart, and it feels fresh. The rythm is just right. But damn if Gordon-Levitt doesn't look scary "disguised" as young Bruce Willis.
