THE REVOLUTION IS MY BOYFRIEND! So, what does Bruce LaBruce want? To shock the audience? To provoke us into SOME kind of response? Or does he just want to show some straight dudes exploring their sexuality and failing to revolt because they fall in love? Only LaBruce knows the answer to that, but it is fascinating to ponder. Although fitfully amusing in places, The Raspberry Reich is mostly a surprisingly dull blend of naive political sloganeering and graphic sexual content. Writer-director Bruce La Bruce may think he is being witty and subversive, but he just ends up being rather tiresome.
Modern sex-pol exploitative production, with a bit of a Noe feel to it mixed with la chinoise and some cheap porn. The miracle is that it kind of works! Actually enjoyed the text and the playfulness even though taken straight it would have been terrible. One. Thing this film is not is straight though. Homosexual intifada, gun sucking and social norms breakage and all.
Not for everyone. There are parts copying Godard: the flashing slogans in big letters, gun shots to separate scenes, left wing revolutionary thought and a lot that is LaBruce's own. This film thumbs its nose at the male gaze which is part of why I love it, partly by thumbing its nose at Hollywood's fear of showing male nudity which I love too. It is a left wing film which makes fun of the left at the same time.
