Blair Witch निर्देशक Adam Wingard
There’s a superfluity of recording devices, including mounted body and surveillance cams; old-school mini DV; and even a drone, none of which pay off in any clever or satisfying way; rather the ability to cut all of the variously captured footage together into a straight-forward, almost classical shot-reverse-shot narrative only underlines the filmmakers’ lack of imagination. Blair Witchby necessity requires a series of strict limitations; otherwise it’s only a movie.

The cast acquits itself naturally enough for the faux-vérité proceedings, but director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, longtime collaborators heretofore best known for 2011 breakout You’re Next, don’t quite succeed in bringing any of these characters to life. Wingard seems to have expended a lot more energy in devising the film’s marvelously glitchy visual scheme, the unintended result being that it’s the gadgets, and not the people themselves, that often seem to be truly imperiled here.

If nothing else, “Blair Witch,” a so-so new entry in the found-footage freakout subgenre, suggests that the gimmicky franchise resuscitation is not strictly the domain of the major studios. But to be fair, it’s also one of the few examples of this dispiriting trend that does, from time to time, elicit your admiration for the cheeky inventiveness of the filmmaking instincts on display.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Blair Witch

I think I smell a ra(n)t...ing. a ranting: beyond nil. I was oh so impressed with 'You're Next' but since Goddard failed hard with The Martian's script (post 'Cabin in the Woods') so did Wingard with EVERYTHING on this film: no suspense or drama, no pathos nor fear; no nothing. A collage of the worst clichés of the genre, done in the most amateurish of ways. Getting tired of those reviews saying "scariest XYZ ever">0

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Blair Witch

There's not a moment that doesn't feel directed. While this does result in some beautiful shots & surprising moments of 'pure cinema', it detracts from the supposed authenticity of the found-footage idea. The original film was a masterstroke of cinéma vérité, built around suggestion, & the anticipation of something unknown. This recycles the same formula, but squanders all potential for mystery, suspicion & suspense.

  • Scorpio Velvet's rating of the film Blair Witch

Kinda like the original film except for the fact that it's also a sequel if you look at the plot (without the interviews or news in). Much darker and even well-shot, I think Wingard did nevertheless a good job bringing back the whole "Blair Witch" thing but still wondered what the fuck was that creature all about doing in there. 0.0

  • The Macho King's rating of the film Blair Witch

-1 & 1/2 stars- Boringly mediocre at best, forgettable cinematic garbage juice at worst. Lackluster clichéd shallow horror fodder thats a blatant cash grab riding off the coattails of the original legacy, it's basically a caricature of itself. Would of been more entertaining if they would of just went balls to the wall 20mins in, instead of meandering about for over a hour and saving everything for the last 20 mins.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Blair Witch

Blair Witch should've lost the found footage element to differentiate it from the 1st, as it's a loss that Wingard doesn't bring his fine directing style here that he did in The Guest, A Horrible Way to Die, and You're Next. Story wise, Barrett's screenplay creates too many thin characters, and the action takes too long to get going. Hopefully, this and Death Note is not the start of their longer dry spell.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Blair Witch

Just slightly better than the second. It does nothing to acknowledge the fact that now "found footage" is a whole genre, with many movies produced and several even more interesting than the original 1999 Blair Wicth Project. This is also a sad repetition of the same formula of the first and second film. The found footage of a group of teenagers that was filming a documentary in haunted woods. Seems the same script.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Blair Witch

I like Wingard's work - to me he is one of the new faces of horror that stand out by creating atmosphere. Since You're Next, he's able to get me all tense and uptight. One star for the zoom in scare-then-calming-down scene; another star for the tunnel sequence - it freaked-me-out; and a last one for its general mood: it has got a more serious and suffering vibe than just a yell-and-run show. Good, but not perfect.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Blair Witch

A case of filmmakers who made a movie just because they could and not because they should. I´m sure Barrett and Wingard love the original but that does not warrant the existance of this lacklustre sequel. In the movie´s defence: it is tense, generates scares and has some details and story beats the original didn´t. Too bad the scares are jump scares of the cheapest kind. And why found footage???
