Of course most persons remember this movie for Mel and Sig, but Linda Hunt stole the show. She was terrific!

It's too bad this movie couldn't shot in Indonesia because the government's regulations back then. THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY is less political than I thought. Although, it took place when G30S/PKI happened. I loved this movie because it has some interesting characters. There's an ABS reporter who was ready to risk everything and played by the great Mel Gibson. Not to mention, Linda Hunt's excellent acting too...

Fantastic Mel Gibson, on a very early stage, with much more substance as before. Unforgettable: the eye scene.

At its center Mel Gibson as a reporter and Sigourney Weaver as a British military attache assistant enter a courtship led by Billy Kwan, a photographer who help's Gibson's character on report coverage. Linda Hunt plays Billy with charm, staging a Wayang kulit play.

Thematically messy, and fragmentary editing clouds the story, though it does mostly save it from sluggishness. When the film leaves Billy it loses its center, but it transcends its flaws to be a near-great film, thanks to an outstanding sense of place and Hunt's performance as Billy. Weaver, accent aside, hits the right note of maddening opacity, and it's nice to see Gibson at his pre-crazy, charismatic best.
