It's amazing that Burton creates a multi-dimensional environment in 6 minutes. There is also incredible character depth, considering the limited time. And I loved the "never more" line as an ending. 5/5.
'and my soul from out that shadow, that lies floating on the floor, shall be lifted never more..' such brilliant short film about one imaginative little boy. For black and white animated film, it really has colors of its own. Reminds me of my childhood or of anyone's childhood. Very simple, yet captivating&wonderful!
`His voice was soft and very slow,As he quoted The Raven from Edgar Allen Poe: “and my soul from out that shadow, that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted - Nevermore!`
gothic,dark atmosphere,Edgar Allan Poe poetry elements,and obviously influence,as always,beautifully weird characters.
Mixture of Burtons vast, genius imagination,I think in a way - autobiographical, true masterpiece in only 6 minutes.
Imagine an alternate universe where Tim Burton made animations like this instead of those embarrassing Alice In Wonderland films. Sad to think about really. I mean there is Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, but those are really just shadows of this early work. Vincent is a cute tribute to a great actor, and a fitting send off as it was one of Price's last works. The love for the aesthetic can be felt unlike these days.
It's great that Price was game to do this little film. For me w/ Burton the earlier the film, the more earnest. The eccentricities here could distract you from the fact that it's a keenly felt portrait of childhood alienation and having been a bullied kid with mental health problems I can relate to the self-mythologising in the face of indifference to the fact that you feel terrible and alone. Angsty Edward Gorey!
