The Wild Pear Tree
Nuri Bilge Ceylan तुर्की, 2018
It’s defiantly cerebral — resistant to summary, classification and perhaps easy comprehension as well

[It] may seem daunting, those patient or curious enough to see it will have their good faith pay off in emotional spades, for this is a film whose piercing potency slowly creeps up on you, burrows into your psyche, and lingers long after the film’s final frame.

Ceylan’s latest two films [. . . take] us hostage within introverted narratives that shovel ideas down our throats. I consider this a step backwards, since in a country where our voices are crushed every day, cinema should be an open-air pavilion that expands our consciousness of ourselves and of the horrific events surrounding us.

The result is a film that I found more admirable than likeable. Certainly its portrait of Sinan captures a certain recognizable type of self-assured, stubborn character, and there is a certain humor in that portrayal. . . . I found the ending a bit too pat and easy.

Simultaneously static and ambulatory, Sinan spends much of the time trying to find a publisher for his ambitious novel, from which the film takes its title—another self-reflexive move on Ceylan’s part, who has succeeded in translating to screen the experience of being engrossed by a particularly discursive, verbose, and occasionally hubristic novel.

An impressively mobile film: many exchanges are shot in unbroken takes as the characters walk through meadows and up and down dirt roads that wind through magnificent landscapes whose beauty renders the frustrations of this young man (very well acted by Aydin Dogu Demirkol) as so much misplaced passion.

It stretches past the three-hour mark, most of which is filled with long, involved dialogues on weighty topics, but far from being a spectatorial ordeal, the proceedings are kept at a brisk pace.

Even the most arcane of the exchanges can unfold in the splendor of a dappled summertime field. . . . This may sound like faint praise because it is, but it is also a considerable relief, marking “The Wild Pear Tree” as a decidedly more inviting prospect than its forbidding predecessor. When you feel about to overdose on verbiage, you can always check out the foliage.

Ceylan presses his fondness for dialogue and debate in new directions, effectively structuring the first half of this expansive film as a series of extended, tense, and often hilarious conversations about literature, popularity, love, modernity — issues central to the role of an artist today, especially in a place like Turkey.

Ceylan seems to grapple with some very personal feelings about family here, but the emotional engagement never transcends its premised sentimentality, nor does it rise to a level that compensates for the receding intellectualism of The Wild Pear Tree’s first half.

In Sinan, Ceylan gives us an impressively detailed, if occasionally ponderous portrait of a new generation of young men in Turkey. . . . His is a rich, difficult character, and even after three hours of observing and listening to him, I’m still not quite sure what he stands for, where all his anger comes from, or what he desires to love in life.

It’s neither slow nor boring; like “Winter Sleep,” it’s a Chekhovian drama that takes its time to introduce and analyze the behavior of an arrogant, condescending protagonist, peeling back layers until we’ve understood the full breadth of his contempt.

The performances are superb throughout, none more so than Demirkol as the far from entirely sympathetic Sinan. Few filmmakers are as adept at depicting the flawed male psyche as Ceylan; here, once again, his distinctive blend of analytical detachment, wry wit and unsentimental compassion has produced a remarkably complex and convincing portrait, both of an individual and of a society.

It is a formidable film—which is to say, it may be a great film, but it is not an easy one, nor an easy one to like. . . . Like Winter Sleep, his new film makes me wonder how much Ceylan is now motivated by a passion for cinema. I may change my mind on a second viewing, but for now The Wild Pear Tree seems less the work of a great filmmaker than that of an important novelist. That feels to me like a loss.
