“I’m more open to the idea that dream imagery is merely a kind of ‘cognitive noise,’ or fragments of experience in waking life that have been stewed together randomly in one’s mind. We use ‘dreamlike’ to describe fiction (as in, fiction that seems to portray a kind of illogical or unrealistic event) or describe certain fictional things as ‘the stuff of nightmares,’ but what do we really mean by that?
