यह कहानी बहुत ही पहले के समय, हिंसा के समय में घटित होती है। पूरे यूरोप में, युद्ध फैल रहा था। एक शहर में दो बहनें रहती थीं…

हमारा अभिप्राय

With the beguiling 16mm Mercuriales, Virgil Vernier emerged fully formed as one of the most original & distinctive new aesthetes in French cinema. A disorienting debut feature that elevates the most everyday and banal situations of contemporary life to the metaphysical, otherworldly, and ethereal.

One of my favorite films at the ND/NF this year, Virgil Vernier’s Mercuriales (2014), is a metaphysical, bloodless, vampiric tale, perfectly suited to our soulless capitalist age… Vernier does a splendid job of recasting Paris as a place of new, confused cultural and geographical markers, reimagining his city through the eyes of his estranged protagonists.

By extracting rich, strange metaphor from the circumscribed territory of the French suburbs, Vernier creates an inexhaustibly layered portrait of contemporary life and elevates his film to a cosmic level.

Mysterious and soulful, Virgil Vernier’s debut fiction feature has its eyes on the night skies and its feet firmly planted on concrete… The film’s full of hard-to-assimilate details, not to mention a raucous analog electronic score by James Ferraro that’s like Tangerine Dream led by John Bonham. All create a sense of primal emotions, seething under drab contemporary surfaces, that have yet to find expression.

  • harniman.gerald's rating of the film Mercuriales

Mundane life of modern urban cities, pointless jobs, barren landscapes of concrete, searches for relevance without hope. Dysfunctional society working in a world devoid of meaning, ultimately destroying what is secure to provide unattainable goals, rushing to repeat what has already become obsolete.

  • David Davidson's rating of the film Mercuriales

This was fascinating. Mercuriales has a haunting mood that threads the thin line between fairy tale and nightmare as it explores the diverse young lives in France's countryside. Closer to early Claire Denis than to Pedro Costa (but still has a bit of both). Vernier has the promise to be one of France's exciting new directors, up there with Gonzalez and Mandico. Excited to discover the newer one. Thanks Mubi!

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Mercuriales

Vernier takes an interesting approach which has completely different style in time and space with pretentious music in 80's cheap horror, two girls prowling around Europe (shades of Rivette), social critique like terror of terrorism (twin buildings' definitely 9.11 motive)/ immigration / prejudice against religion. I thought of "History of Fear" & "Neighboring Sounds". Invisible war spreads all over the world.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Mercuriales

Faiblesses au montage et au scénario, mais l'interprétation bouleversante de Ana NEBORAC & Philippine STINDEL illumine ce désespérant néant des banlieues. === Weaknesses in the editing and the scenario, but the moving interpretation of Ana NEBORAC & Philippine STINDEL illuminates this hopeless nothingness of the suburbs.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Mercuriales

"Indie" cinema # 6: the composition. From real(ity) elements, it's inscribed a cinematographic mythology diluted by a composite structure that equals every component, differentiating it: science fiction, realism, fantastic - according to Rivette - and the socio-economic critique are joined in a film that unveils it transfiguring them, forming a unique organic texture. Scientific realism, "fictions du réel".

  • Charlie Douglas-Hamilton's rating of the film Mercuriales

Totally engrossing: amazing characters, snappy dialogue and beautiful cinematography. A disorienting and metaphysical film which chooses to tell a story about a time by presenting brief snapshots of its actors - each bringing nuance to the image. Powerfully observed moments of malaise, of debate, of fleeting joy, of the lies we tell ourselves; all coalesce into a human portrait of living, scared you lack purpose.

  • Dries's rating of the film Mercuriales

  • Korial's rating of the film Mercuriales

Vernier's take on contemporary human condition is exquisitely balanced in tone, mood, and coverage. To escape the peripheries of existence and society, to wake up from the nightmare of drifting away forever into nothingness, we must dream within the dream, strive for a meaning - a home, a decent job, love, money - with the lingering threat of it crumbling, like the building in the finale, before our eyes.
