Ricky Gervais is a genius. He managed to perfectly weave together depression, bitterness, cynicism, hopelessness with humour, love and a very open show of emotions. The end kind of spoiled it a bit because it's a tad too light hearted for me, it seemed rushed and somewhat forced.
If this was a film, it would be in my Top 10 of the year. A wonderful series that I don't particularly want to deconstruct right now. At least level-pegging with The Office as Ricky Gervais' best work.
Fantastic. Dark, cynical, miserable, misanthropic, depressing, but also funny and makes you smile. Ricky has made another great series. Another great comedy/drama which flips emotions within seconds. Almost a big brother to Sick of it, mixed with Derek and the darker tone of One Mississippi. I always loved Ricky's shows but I didn't expect this to be as dark as it was, so it is a great blend.
There are bit too many of these types of shows now, mixing serious, funny and surreal. It's like the makers of this kind of TV doesn't know you can be deadly serious and funny at the same time, without all that sentimentality.
Not as funny as some of his other work (big fan of Extras and The Office), but infinitely better than The Invention of Lying. This has it's funny moments, with a great cast (Diane Morgan is great in everything), but its the underlying message and string themes throughout which makes this stand out
