It’s deadly serious about matters that he takes deadly seriously, and the only things that he derides with any irony are the movie’s snippets of art greater than his own, by artists greater than himself—starting with Wagner, whose “Entry of the Gods into Valhalla” is heard in the first and last scene. The movie’s lack of irony is all the more ironic since its subject is the recklessness of mankind in daring to synthesize humans androidally in order to extend our own control over the universe.

Scott does more than make a horror film here; he makes a film about the horror genre, its history, its place in the psyche, analysing the way the death-dream constantly underlies all fantasies of ego and eros.

There’s an air of mystery to Alien: Covenant that the movie can’t live up to, because for all its interest in what it all means, it has relatively little to show for all that idle questioning. You aren’t alone, humans, but if you’re going to keep squandering perfectly fine IP in favor of asking questions whose implications you don’t take seriously, don’t you deserve to be?

  • chanandre's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

[IMAX] Beware of clean-shaven, blue-eyed, Art Major asshole androids named David (He'd rather reign in Hell)./Someone is not a fan of James Franco: "Oh is that the bloke from 127 Hours trying to rock climb without ropes, with that boyish grin of his? I'll show him what's what-> Let him burn to a crisp inside his hibernation pod. His wife can mourn him over iPad video": ouch much?/ Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley.▽

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott, the ultimate parasite, cannibalizing his own creation, contaminating the spectators with that lethal virus otherwise known as Hollywood cinema. Covenant, a triumph of nihilism, the nihilism of corporate spectacle. A regurgitation of themes, tropes and topoi. An endless cycle of death. The master & servant dialectic reaches the omega point until the next, violent, resurrection. The show must go.

  • Mugino's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

Scott thought it was "too on the nose" to challenge religion with creationism à la alien Engineer and evidently chickened out. The best SF demands vision and backbone, something sorely lacking in these wasted prequels. "Prometheus" could be forgiven, had Shaw and David engaged the Engineers in a fierce ideological battle, uncovering terrifying truths about our existence. Instead, we got this bag of flaming crap.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

This movie is definitely a deadly assalt on couple-normative society (in the occident?). Heterosexial couple is killed brutally, homosexial couple is also killed brutally, interracial couple is of course killed brutally, whoever has a partner is killed and new creatures thrive on their bodies. Originally slasher movie has an element like that but this sublimely grotesque myth for 21st century is at its peak, Hooray!

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

In which the DNA of several movies—a literal sequel to Prometheus, a spiritual sequel to Blade Runner, a Planet of Dr. Moreau, a run-and-gun splatter-fest—mix into a half-formed mutant that bursts from Ridley Scott's chest. It trips on its own mythology, which is a pity, because ALIEN needs no explanation: it was always most potent a long cold stare into the unknown. But I'll watch hard sci-fi with nice sets any day.

  • Skinnedteen's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

Despite its masterful special effects, Ridley Scott needs to trust his audience and keep reinventing instead of defaulting to a repetitive and predictable B-horror film. He got lost in puzzling the pieces of Prometheus and Alien that it just ends up being less significant.

  • Gia de Almeida's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

David is one of my favourite villains in film for the longest time (I love the androids of the Alien series - i.e. David and Bishop) but the movie is just too predictable, very entertaining but predictable. Did I mention I love David?

  • Tigrão's rating of the film Alien: Covenant

Many things to say here, good and bad. On the plus side, it's a Ridley Scott film, so gorgeous to look at, beautifully directed, great entertainment, and a certainly far better entry than Prometheus. On the down side, the plot is too unnecessarily complicated and stuffy: there's too many different themes, different aspects, that the integrity of the film loses itself sometimes.
