A fantasized portrayal of Polish auteur Walerian Borowczyk: Boro in the Box discovers a cruel and obscene world. He experiences banal yet colorful adventures, caressing erotic birds and organic cameras in a phantasmagorical Alphabet.

“I was born out of a fortuitous encounter between a flower and a butterfly”. Poets make even the worst of things (i.e. rape) sound amazing! The narrator is narrating his life’s story in the most euphemised, naive, surreal, benign, and subjective way, as if the director was himself the camera, framing the world from inside a box. This is cinema at its best! Incredibly poetic and well shot, without becoming pretentious.
I doubt I'll see anything more strange, more imaginative or more beautiful this year. Rather wonderful and great to see Elina Löwensohn again after seeing her first many years ago in films by the inspiring Hal Hartley.
If someone ever makes a biopic about me, can it please be like that? It was my first Mandico, and I was in love after the first few minutes. Svankmajer, Khytilova, Tarr, and more: bizarrely entertaining, strangely beautiful, and so perfectly disgusting. I actually did not think about Kobo Abe's Box Man which is an obvious connection, because the similar subject is handled just as well but differently.
Conceptually delicious and executed w/ considerable panache, BORO IN THE BOX moves beyond homage into a distinctive sui generis sphere of abstracted poetic reconstruction, mischievously engineering a kind of baroque mash-up that defiles the popular notion of a reverent biography. If Walerian Borowczyk was congenially irreverent, Mandico, engaging him, would seem doubly so. Hallowed play. Silken and gorgeous.
