Can we talk for a minute about INSIDE OUT’s less-than-cutting-edge gender politics? …We find a mother whose emotions are uniformly weepy and feminized, while the father’s brain operates like a short-fused, potato chip-scented edition of Sports Center. That Riley’s internal dialogue is allowed the heterogeneity of Amy Poehler and Lewis Black is curious, but only just—INSIDE OUT teases a notion of gender fluidity that it’s not equipped to address. Wake me for the Pixar movie that does.

The film is ingenious, Pixar’s most satisfying since Up six years ago (reviews have been rhapsodic, naming it among the best of the year) – but it also shares a lot of DNA with Toy Story 3, another film that dwelled on the sad obsolescence of childhood things and played better for older kids. Ultimately, Inside Out’s flaws aren’t the fault of the filmmakers so much as Western culture – an infantilised culture that idealises childhood and wallows in arrested adolescence.

  • ramosbarajas's rating of the film Inside Out

I went in not expecting much, but to my delight it managed to stir my emotions. It delivers an important message. There are not many bumps along the way, and it delivers an enjoyable experience that gets better the more you think about.

  • Mugino's rating of the film Inside Out

Pixar's frustrating story limitations are often due to the confinements of being child appropriate. Why not make films for adults? There's also a dangerous (and very Western) implication here that we have no personal responsibility for our own feelings and actions. Had Riley summoned Joy herself from the depths of despair, the film would have been more transformative.

  • Matthew Martens's rating of the film Inside Out

Almost definitely the neatest homage to the most notorious segment of Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask) ever devised. And even if it doesn't provide a particularly accurate guide to the workings of the brain, it compensates pretty nicely with an outsized emotional intelligence and a geyser of very pretty colors.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Inside Out

"Inside Out's" central conceit has the strange effect of brilliantly illustrating as well as grossly simplifying complex human emotions. But Pixar's bittersweet look back at a most formative age deserves to be praised for its rather sophisticated message of championing sadness as an integral and necessary part of life - something few Hollywood films dare to do these days, let alone the ones targeted at children.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Inside Out

I give it 4 stars because I do not know what I could expect more from a children-targeted animation. I just love when cinema makes me live another parallel universe and Upside Out did just that. I caught myself laughing so hard at several moments - it brought my kid side on a sunday night. A nice way to end/begin a week... you did it again Pixar.

  • Renton47's rating of the film Inside Out

Descartes showed that we only ever know ourselves, but I'm not entirely sure that's even true. Better, why stop at our sentience, I'd much rather believe it's everywhere, even in long forgotten invisible friends. This is a lovely film that manages to respect our magnificent neural networks. Emotions make decisions but they aren't the only thing happening, and this film never undermines the WHOLE complex computer.

  • Aprilia Gunawan's rating of the film Inside Out

OMG best animation of the year. Le cerveau et les émotions sont des choses compliquées que personne ne peut expliquer. Ce film avait admirablement réussit à nous montrer cela. Triple dent gum will make you smile~

  • oldeuboi's rating of the film Inside Out

I don’t know why, but recent Pixar movies don’t impressed me me much. ‘Inside Out’ in no exception. Aside from one moving moment, overall it’s a cliche attempt on provoking sentimentalism. The emotion is rather manufactured than genuinely build. Mildly entertaining nonetheless.
