The missing link between Dr. Mabuse and The Exorcist III, this cross fertilization between a serial killer noir and a surreal horror piece is a consistently quirky piece of work. The plot is somewhat ramshackle, but still highly original (moreso than Black Sunday), and Bava's stunning fantastic intrusions into a gritty noir world still pack a punch. Paul Muller is a great pathetic victim, and Canales is pure gold.
3.5 stars ~ For a first Italian talkie horror, I Vampiri is not as dated as it could be. Beautiful cinematography and transformation scenes worthy of seeing. A little messy plot-wise, but the production challenges were overcome and it resulted in a legitimately entertaining horror film buried in the beginnings of Italy's horror history.
two brilliant film makers reunited for one cult but now rather dated movie which is part of the renewal of European goth horror cinema. It is not a vampiric film but rather a sadistic doctor story accompanied by a vague investigation. Sadly it brought nothing more to schemas used in old Universal "monster" films directed many years ago.
