The brilliant and rightly heralded heist sequence clocks in at 34 minutes and remains as prime example of Dassin’s full-blooded mastery of pace and studied eye for inventive symbols. The upside-down umbrella, collecting scraps of debris during the heist rather than shielding people from the elements, is a beguiling emblem of the director’s vision of a world out of sync.

Though not made in the US, RIFIFI is possibly the greatest byproduct of the Hollywood blacklist… Today the film is most famous for the riveting heist sequence, a gorgeous and tense half-hour spent breaking into a jewelry store in total silence, the hushed robbers agonizing over the slightest sounds they make.

Rififi moves at an efficient and methodical pace, never wasting a minute as it barrels through the robbery and its bloody aftermath. But beyond the taut mechanics of Dassin’s suspense thriller, the underworld backdrop seeps through with documentary-like clarity, as does the faint but irrepressible glint of compassion that Servais’ brutality never quite snuffs out.

  • Stefan Drees's rating of the film Rififi

Jules Dassin's masterpiece is an absolut crime film classic. The heist sequence - nearly 30 minutes without words and music - is incredible and tense, the nightclub scene with the performance of the title song develops aorund iconic shadow visuals. Besides, the movie comes with one of George Auric's finest film music scores.

  • Film Aficionerdo's rating of the film Rififi

It's 11pm on a Tuesday and I pop in Rififi to see what all the fuss is about, fully expecting to fall asleep and finish the film in the morning. By 1am on Wednesday morning I was wide awake and had just loved every second of this movie. Its coolness holds up like an Otter Pop in a subzero freezer. The heist is the best, but the rest of Rififi is absolutely incredible. I need more sleep.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Rififi

1950s misogyny: The "hero" of the film makes a woman take off her clothes and then he beats her with a belt, leaving scars. The audience is led to believe that she deserved it. In another scene, a hat check girl is manhandled gratuitously, and seems to enjoy that. Whenever a woman appears onscreen, it is only as a prop. Too mid-century Hollywood-ish for my taste, but the last scene is tremendous and very memorable.

  • Eric Rucker's rating of the film Rififi

Received movie hipster kool-aid passed around is all that keeps this afloat in lemmingsville. The only thing going for it was the kid actor. This doesn't merit genre praise. This wasn't film. This wasn't art, let alone advanced art in any aspect, for 1955 or any year prior. If a great Murnau film merits five stars, then one star is not low enough for this in comparison.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Rififi

One of the quintessential French crime films, 'Rififi' has lost none of its power to impress and thrill. The heist sequence is thoroughly impressive and its influence on cinema can't be denied but the film is full of outstanding sequences. #Essential cinema.

  • EdieMaas's rating of the film Rififi

2.75 Despite solid direction (if more of scenes than overall) & cinematography, it's an average vehicle for a few cool bits in the 2nd part… And then this thin slime of toxic masculinity: More hard-boiled than those pussy Americans, w/ the unrestrained misogyny to prove it, like that's a signifier of virility... But his self-sacrifice, for his friend’s kid, lets you know his heart’s in the right place? Not impressed.

  • Thomas's rating of the film Rififi

Rightly revered gangster thriller in the classic noir tradition, but one which refreshingly differentiates itself from an American approach of the genre. For example it's more forward attitude to sex, and the famous silent robbery set-pice. Full of slow burning tension as the suspense builds, as does the robbers' [and director Dassin's] rigorous attention to detail.

  • João Eça's rating of the film Rififi

comparable to jean-pierre melville's le doulos and bob le flambeur (his two best films) if not even better. jules dassin was a hard-boiled director when he wanted to be, and this film (as brute force, the night and the city, celuit qui doit mourir and many others) proves it better than anything.
