Complete bastardization of a wonderful book. Taking a very personal and tragic story about the rape and murder of a young girl and transforming it into a showcase for special effects is probably one of the most disrespectful and thoughtless things I've ever seen a director do. Shame on you, Peter Jackson.
Fantastic performance by Stanley Tucci and young actor Saorse Ronan only problem is the George Lucas/ M. Night Shyamalan like need to over-cute an version of purgatory the "in between" that could have been much better as a darker vision ala Guillermo del Toro or Terry Gilliam. I have a feeling that Jackson is trying to hard to be the next Kubrick and coming up several kilos light
There are things that work about this movie. It's a marked improvement on Alice Sebold's mediocre novel, and the expertly-crafted and stylishly shot suspense scenes are glimpses of the filmmaker Peter Jackson once was and may still be. But these inspired moments are spaced out in a film packed with underdeveloped characters, sloppy plotting, and forced sentimentality. A major disappointment.
My expectations were so low that i almost expected a pleasant surprise. And indeed, I got it. I really liked this film; for sure the heavenly visuals are cheesy, but also kind of beautiful. We must not forget that this heaven is the dream of a fourteen year old girl in the seventies! The mood (and especially the music by Brian Eno!) keeps the film engaging in almost every scene. I thougt I loved you, Peter Jackson, but i guess that was just a wrong impression. the narration fucked the whole movie up. oh, sorry, the editing was also pretty terrible, as was the casting (except for Tucci and Ronan). and last but not least, fuck the CGI, please. Get rid of it.
Saoirse Ronan gives a terrific performance and,i predict, has a long career ahead.Lovers of the book will be disappointed but,i guess, some parts had to be omitted.I would have preferred to see more of Susie's first crush.
Wahlberg,Weisz,Imperioli and Sarandon were given almost nothing to do.And,perhaps less visual effects would have made it less bland?Still a recommendation.
