Some days a great script and the perfect casting just come together. Wisely eschewing the smug archness that befouls many a modern American indie, and always pulling back from tipping into sentimentality, this homage to the European 'crossroads' movie - a bunch of disparate, desperate strangers meet randomly and cling hard to each other - is the definition of charming cinema. Marginal characters assembled around this rather odd story with a good-feel factor at the heart of it. But the experiment tries too hard to squeeze the value of friendship out of every single encounter, quite often twisting and manipulating, annoying, building up & cutting down, in the most anarchic fashion, emotional ties that McCarthy trades endlessly to disguise what otherwise is an awfully weak script.
Sometimes the most beautiful and interesting things about people are also the simplest. This film aims to capture that, the simple and at times awkward beauty of life and growing close to people. The movies not without its weak points, the ending feels a bit forced. But for me watching the film gives me a sense of peace. Even at its most melancholy it feels like I'm hanging out with a group of close friends.
Wise, gentle and subtle film about lonely people breaking through their personal barriers. Peter Dinklage is the dynamo that powers this thing, but Bobby Cannavale and Patricia Clarkson deserve lifetime passes for their work here as well. Blew my mind (in a good way) when I found out this was directed by Templeton from the Wire.
