"Intimate, heartfelt, and heartbreaking, Up in the Air is a worthwhile experience that features great performances from Clooney, Fermiga, and Kendrick and a timely message that resonates. It may not be the most engaging film, however it is enjoyable and well-crafted".
i gave this movie a chance. i watched about 45 minutes of it and shut it off. it was nothing but pretenious dribble. it also proves that casting george clooney, vera farmiga, or anna kendrick in anything will sour it.
I was actually with it for a while, I found it smart, engaging, sharply-crafted by director Jason Reitman (who seemed to be back on track after the mediocre 'Juno') and expertly acted by its strong cast. But at some point it just takes a nose-dive, becoming bland, trite, and dripping with forced sentimentality. Maybe worth watching for the first 2/3 or so, but a major disappointment as a whole.
As long as film form is mainstream Hollywood cinema is unlikely to succeed in radicalizing the seemingly radical messages it wants to convey. Here, a Clooney-centred production strikes the right tragicomic chord (in the scenes of the bad news announcements to expendable employees) but, overall, neither the film's poltical edge nor the conservative deconstruction of these businesspeople's adventurous miles convince.
In times of economic peril/uncertainty you need people there for you. This is the kind of sentiment that only works in a movie, real life is far more complicated than pat cliches. The performances are quite good, the biting satire does gets drowned out by sap (why?), and the song choices tend to lead audiences emotions (transparently manipulative)
Well, maybe, just maybe, the fact that the main character "helps" people who are seconds away from being jobless dealing with it, has a meaning, after all. Because his own life has no structure, no emotional ties, no "land", he has the perfect job. He found, himself, ways to cope with it, to love it. So he gives professional "help" for people about to lose all he "thinks" he does not need. But then, he's distracted.
