The subject is nothing new, the political viewpoint is also well known and has been done better elsewhere, but the unique methods Santiago Álvarez uses in stitching together war footage makes this film noteworthy. Oddly it's the sound track, music and experimental editing with B&W
image manipulation which lift it into a higher tier of stylistic documentary film-making--albeit hagiographic and congratulatory.
It's unfortunate that some may avoid this short film out of political principle or speculation that it is only an idolatry piece to Ho Chi Minh. Santiago Alvarez never married music and images as poignantly as he did here. The last eight minutes render Godard's Maoist films into de trop cinema. I was overwhelmed.
Inspired partisan doc where a powerful soundtrack and experimental editing take us on a psychedelic tour around and Cuban homage to comrade Ho Chi Minh and his revolutionary struggle against Imperialism. Underpinned by dramatic war imaginery the narrative loosens up with vague strokes but always flows and sets up the scene for an heroic mood.
