QUELLO CHE NON SO DI LEI

Roman Polanski Francia, 2017
Both Based on a True Story and The Double Lover play with the literary tropes of the doppelgänger and the alter ego, and the anxieties they opens up in the lives of Parisian intellectual elites. But neither film is truly satisfying, with the venerable directors content mostly to go through the motions of the kind of narrative twists the genre of the camp thriller impels, and which they themselves have amply mined in the past, rather than truly dazzle with the unexpected.

Polanski sleepwalks his way through the film, manifesting precious little of the skill and invention that fueled the slow-burn suspense and sinister atmospheres of superficially similar works such as Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion. The most perverse aspect of Based on a True Story is its resolution: after two hours of insipid build-up, the film abruptly closes on a note so anticlimactic that it barely qualifies as an ending.

Offering little in the way of fresh material and mixing together influences such as "Misery," "Single White Female," and Polanski's own "The Ghost Writer," this sophisticated French/Polish two-hander is at least a good showcase for the two lead actresses.

It's easy to dismiss this as light, late Polanski – a work-out more than a fully-fledged movie. But it does work nicely in tandem with his two of his recent films, 2010's The Ghost Writer and 2013's Venus in Fur... The wall-to-wall synth Musak probably makes the whole thing a little tough to swallow, but this is rich with ideas and surprising wisps of drama. It's also a highly self-critical film, which is an all-too-rare spectacle these days.

This hugely self-referential psychological melo-thriller is a teasing, tricksy, hugely entertaining, in some ways old-fashioned divertissement – although for ‘old-fashioned', you could say classic, with a post-modern twist. At any rate, it features terrific cat-and-mouse lead performances by Eva Green, at her most snakily vampish, and Emmanuelle Seigner, crackling with nerviness as a writer in search of inspiration, and finding a vein of far juicier material than she can handle.

The House Next Door
Roman Polanski's Based on a True Story, contrary to its title, isn't: It's a fiction film about a successful author who avoids her past and an eerily obsessive fan who pushes her to write the "hidden book" her previous work seemed to promise. Of course, Polanski's film is also transparently about the director himself—as well as about his co-writer, French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. And there's an almost incredible arrogance to that.
