Beats catches the misery and desperation that powered rave culture and the era of DayGlo shell suits. The disappointment is that the Welsh strips all the color out of Hurley's vibrant play, which he originally staged with a live DJ accompaniment.

Welsh’s frequently funny and moving “Beats” accomplishes a lot in its seemingly simple story of a fragile friendship. The “Footloose”- like law of the land will likely be an eye-opener for many viewers. Welsh and co-screenwriter Kieran Hurley... underline the absurdity of it by quoting the law word-for-word with an appropriate sneer and middle finger in its general direction.

The drab, angry, morning-after aesthetic proves transportive as Welsh adds such a visceral new dimension to the “I was there” power of the film’s source material that it’s hard to believe this all came out of a one-man play (by co-writer Kieran Hurley).

Although I’m pretty resistant these days to straight-white-boys-coming-of-age films, Beats is so tender in its depiction of the friendship between two working-class teens living in a wretched town in Scotland in 1995 and finding freedom through the rave scene, and is so accomplished in its storytelling . . . that I wanted to find out how and why it was made.

Frequently very funny, sometimes harrowing, it’s a film which should have appeal to audiences beyond the veterans of the scene it depicts.
