Nadine Labaki Libano, 2018

IDA's rating of the film Capernaum

The poster looks like a bad NGO ad, and that's exactly what the movie is. Using a cute baby, a cute little boy, a cute little girl to play his sister, and repetitive drone shots of Beirut, Nadine Labaki reaches SO hard for you to cry and give her an Oscar. Very unsettling and shallow in direction (flashy "montage" with the African migrant was ridiculous) and in her messaging: "poor people don't deserve children."
