Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Music and love unites them, but their journey travelling from Havana to New York brings heartache and torment amidst the Cuban revolution, and highlights a pivotal moment in the evolution of jazz.

The drawing is magnificent, with ravishing, detailed cityscapes of Havana, New York and Las Vegas. Swaying, snake-hipped Latin music from Bebo Valdés, Tito Puente and others reinforces the languid, sensual mood.
A love story with visuals at it's finest, wrapping a romance 'and all that jazz' during the 50s between Havana and New York. Well-achieved ingredients for a nice and lovely film that remind us the involving power of jazz when it comes to love.
Lovely to see beautiful Cuba depicted in beautiful animation. A heart warming story that mirrors the struggles of many Cubans unable to leave the island to be with their loved ones, even if this is not the story being told in the film.
For a movie that's called Chico & Rita, it sure has a lot of Chico, and it sure has a lot of Rita (by themselves) and not enough Chico AND Rita. The story is okay - it feels incomplete and that ending is not very good. The animation is interesting, but odd at times. I think the biggest pluses are the music and the mood, but overall it falls short.
In keeping the visual quality of a graphic novel (and therefore being not too real in showing the figures and their movements) the movie creates a very special atmosphere and the love story doesn’t appear as sentimental as in a conventional movie. There are also some very original moments, always connected with the use of jazz, e.g. the car chasing sequence or the dream sequence during the journey to New York.
