Il disprezzo Diretto da Jean-Luc Godard
A prescient exercise in meta, this brilliant movie traces the deterioration of a screenwriter’s marriage, which parallels the film based on The Odyssey (directed by Fritz Lang, suavely playing himself) that the writer is hired to rewrite. Here love brings out the worst machinations in people, as Georges Delerue’s elegiac score strikes a moving and unsettling juxtaposition of the exaltation and meanness of human life.

I first saw Le Mépris many years ago in a print so faded that everything was pale pink; it felt like gazing at an artefact from an immeasurably distant past. Watching the film now, with its reds and Mediterranean blues restored to their full intensity, the film is still redolent of a lost antiquity, not least because Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 feature is so steeped in melancholy and a sense of mourning.

it is a full and immensely satisfying work, its tensions and teasing contradictions, moral, cinematic and intellectual, making it as exhilarating, alive and modern a film as any… The repeated motifs and melodies themselves combine, as does the movie, the classical and the modern, deepenening the meanings and the mixed emotions of defiance and nostalgia that make Le Mépris so very affecting and – a word Godard would be proud of – so very beautiful.

‘C’est un film simple sur des choses compliquées’ (Jean-Luc Godard) A film within a film is what Godard presents to us, showing the disintegration of a married couple and the production of a movie. This film is masterly directed by Jean-Luc and makes you love it from the introduction. The subtle differences between men and women are shown and so many other things that will make you fall in love with the characters.

  • D.J. Devereux's rating of the film Il disprezzo

Everyone will say Breathless is Jean Luc Godard's best. But for me, and the lovers of the craft of cinema rather than the cultural shift and revelation within cinema history.. It is this film that stands up against all of Godard'd many different themes and meanings. Godard asks the questions, so tomorrow we finally achieve our stardom and fame, we get all we worked for..Then what? Fritz Lang's Performance is king

  • Ethan's rating of the film Il disprezzo

This is Godard's 8 1/2 and he packs this film full of extraordinary talent from the amazing Bardot to the passive Piccoli, the cynical Palance, and the legendary Fritz Lang playing himself making a version of The Odyssey. Films don't get much better than this.

  • Olly Perrett's rating of the film Il disprezzo

Truly beautiful and agonisingly heartbreaking; Contempt proves just how influential Goddard's style of dialogue has been on Cinema as a whole. Regrettably the pacing of Goddard's films is usually very slow and I can't see them ageing well another 50 years from now. MVP is of course, Goddard himself, who can be felt all over the film.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film Il disprezzo

Because the on-screen romance dissolves without any clear answers, Contempt stands as one of the truest testaments to the difficulty of maintaining relationships. The film score is outstanding, and the meta-conversation about the nature of filmmaking is fascinating. One could spend hours contemplating Godard's use of color, or the captivating subtleties of Brigitte Bardot. A classic through and through.

  • Loki's rating of the film Il disprezzo

A masterpiece. Ok, it's all about miscommunication, bad faith and selling out: not exactly the warmer topics of cinema. The way the movie was made directly addresses the problems the characters are having, hence, a masterpiece. Worth watching more than once. Motor, silenzio!

contempt for cinema also? in the sequence when piccoli is torn by jealousy/fury/indecision, what are those talks about film to him? both art vs. life and art is life topics seem schizoid and artificial.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Il disprezzo

Third time's the charm—after being unmoved (twice) in film school, catching this in a theater did it. How close can a cinephile get to their dream world without killing their muse? Suppose they took the muse for granted? Suppose the muse insisted on having their own life? There are multitudes here, big themes and little games so private that it helps to have basked in Godard (and his own cinephile ideals) to feel it.
