exquisite cinematography and camera work, breathtaking shots of the Yangtze river, some moving + hilarious scenes, and poignant revelations about recent Chinese history. Ultimately though it lapsed into the hollow abstraction/dead end that entraps many inward-looking existentialist flicks. The sentimental music score got tiresome, as did the trope of woman as eternal symbol...in the end I prefer JZK's "Still Life."
