Goodfellas began a 90s trend trying to emulate with little success Scorsese’s iconic mix of realism and gangster cool. One major exception is this rich character drama with the genius inspiration of casting Pacino as a loser mentoring Depp’s up-and-comer—one of cinema’s most complex friendships.
