Leto Diretto da Kirill Serebrennikov
The film can feature a pop song about summer on the beach and feel just as light and unconcerned and pleasurable as the song itself. That said, its formal techniques are an undigested mess of 1980s-era music-video flourishes and ham-handed to-camera meta-commentary, though I found it remarkably easy to edit those out on the fly (neat trick, that).

Some of Serebrennikov’s formal flourishes, however, are embarrassingly out-of-kilter, and there is thus a curious symmetry between the film and its subject: just as the Leningrad punks discovered Lou Reed and Iggy Pop 15 years late, so Leto is the work of a filmmaker who doesn’t quite have his finger on the pulse of contemporary cinema. And yet the film ends on an undeniably moving note.

This film was initially billed as something of a biopic, but with its languid, freewheeling narrative, its constant blurring of fantasy and reality, its mixing of Soviet garage rock with better-known pieces from around the world, Summer proves a lot more than that: an ode to a world without boundaries.

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film Leto

Had the unfortunate fate of being released in a year where there’s plenty of great foreign films around (BURNING, SHOPLIFTERS, ROMA, COLD WAR, and pretty much every other critically acclaimed films). This one is a heaven for 80’s music scene enthusiast

  • mauro's rating of the film Leto

some of the greatest moments of cinema of 2018 (the first live show, the summer party on the beach, psycho killer, the faces of the crowd in the final performance) and a stunning irina starshenbaum.

  • FISCHER's rating of the film Leto

  • Knights of Odessa's rating of the film Leto

  • Aivaras_Z's rating of the film Leto

Its all about the atmosphere of an exciting time in a place where time should have been forgotten and about showing how much ass Kino and Tsoy kicks to this day. Liked it.

  • Ennas's rating of the film Leto

Yes, I can see that the movie has been beautifully made. And yet. I am tired of seeing films in which the women are cast aside, only existing through the men or for the sake of a romantic note in the film. People will say: "it was like this in that time". But I don't buy it. I do not believe that women in the past let themselves being put on the passive chair all the time, without contesting it in some way.

  • Dada Kubin's rating of the film Leto

When you remember your youth, it’s always summer. There’s music everywhere, music that you live, and all these things that can turn out to be anything - or when looking back, things that could’ve been something else, had you or the world been different. Summer is nostalgia, a fun place in time long gone, a fantasyland where rock’n roll is born again and where - in this small frame of time - youth seems everlasting.

  • Aaken's rating of the film Leto

Absolutely stunning film, with gorgeous black & white cinematography by Vladislav Opeliants and a fluid and sensuous direction by Serebrennikov. The music is fantastic and Teo Yoo is perfect as the iconic Viktor Tsoi. A revelation for me.
