This first part in the director’s trilogy exploring German history (also comprising films on Hitler and Karl May) plunges into the fascinating person of Ludwig of Bavaria. Through 28 tableaux, this work of theatrical splendor attests to the king’s lavish taste, balancing kitsch with high art.
