Mean Dreams Diretto da Nathan Morlando
The one strength of “Planetarium” is that it at least has some interesting ideas and an ambitious willingness to explore and mix them together—like showing how spiritual faith and a love for entertainment are not entirely unlike. “Mean Dreams,” on the other hand, does not have a single new idea. Directed by Canadian filmmaker Nathan Morlando, “Mean Dreams” is unremarkable in its scope… It has some of the cheesiest dialogue I’ve heard in this festival.

Familiarity doesn’t always yield tedium, but it’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for Mean Dreams’ sleepy regionalist remix of genre tropes and images. Morlando at least proves a competent craftsman, sustaining some low-key tension in the dimly-lit-dawn set piece that kicks off Jonas and Casey’s life on the run.

The pervasive elegance makes up for a largely derivate plot. We’ve seen variations on this story before, and “Mean Dreams” doesn’t do much to shake up expectations — until, that is, a violent finale that punctuates the characters’ psychological development. Ultimately, “Mean Dreams” has less to do with the nature of family bonds than the brutal experience of tearing them apart.
