The Asphalt Jungle was nothing compared to the epic journe through international waters that Huston undertook in pursuit of the white whale Moby Dick, resulting in a finished film whose enticements include some beautiful pieces of background actor portraiture, tempest-tossed whale-hunt scenes and a rafter-rattling sermon by Orson Welles, looking quite the leviathan himself as Melville’s Father Mapple.

Revisiting Melville after rewatching Huston’s visualization, I was surprised to discover that one of my favorite riffs — the prophetic vision that foretells Ahab’s beckoning corpse, plastered to the whale — was invented by Bradbury. While more a vulgarization of than an improvement on Melville, this bit of business chills the mental atmosphere with an added frisson. The wrinkled rubber contraption that amazed me as a child impresses me still.
