The movie swoons from set piece to set piece, Chéreau’s restless camera accompanied by the keening of the Israeli mezzo soprano Ofra Haza. The boar hunt in which Margot’s older brother, the neurotic King Charles (Jean-Hugues Anglade), is gored and then saved by the captive Henri is nearly as savage as the massacre, but even when Charles isn’t literally sweating blood, it’s all pretty hot stuff.

This movie ruined me. I was 11 when it was released and was living in France at the time; I have since seen it more than 20 times, in various countries and states of undress. It haunts me still; I knew so young that, like Margot, I would be a survivor even when I’d want to be the martyr. It is hard to accept that no matter how depressive a realist you are, there are no escape routes save for fleeting passions.

Though Queen Margot’s sound, sets, costumes, and camerawork collectively stun, Chéreau prioritized his actors, and he gave his ensemble ample freedom to perform. Adjani and Auteuil in particular engage in a delicate, uncertain series of movements together, standing off squarely at some points and collapsing united at others.
