This is a movie that is criminally under seen. Steiger gives a complex performance in this masterpiece from the great Fuller. A film that makes Dances with Wolves look like a joke. Fuller's gritty realism and complex philosophy mixed with a debate on issues like the Civil War, Westward Expansion, and race relations that don't get talked about and portrayed in a mature light. Essential viewing.
Sam, man. God, a perfect belligerent little Fuller. Dude can mount an onslaught, no? Extremely mussed. Glad the DVD I saw has been in no way technically embellished. You want this movie to feel like it was drug through the dirt. Not that it doesn't look good. It looks great. Really a movie about fury and filiation. The titular run in a nice metaphor. Saying something about running away, space, time, and resentment.
Just saw this on an old print in a theatre. A beauty. Fuller's camera slings around the mountains like a sweaty, restless savage until the very end when it's allowed to crawl into a tub of technicolor.. and with the fumes was born Run of the Arrow. Eternally modern pure cinema 5/5
